Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 27, 2026

AutoVocab ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the AutoVocab app (the "App").

Information We Collect

AutoVocab operates primarily as an offline-first app. We do not collect, store, or transmit personally identifiable information to external servers. All vocabulary data, learning progress, and settings are stored locally on your device.

There are three exceptions, all described in detail below:

  • the in-app dictionary search, which sends the single word you search for to a third-party dictionary service so a definition can be shown;
  • app usage analytics, which record which features you use but never the vocabulary you keep; and
  • crash reports, which describe how the App failed and never what you were studying.

Automatically Collected Information

  • Device information: device type, operating system version, and unique device identifiers.
  • Usage analytics: which screens you open and which features you use, sent to Google Analytics for Firebase. Events record the action, never the vocabulary itself — no word, definition, example, or note you write is included. Examples of what is recorded: that a notification was opened or answered, that a practice round was played and how many answers were right, that a level or badge was reached, that a dictionary lookup succeeded or failed, that a backup ran, and that an upgrade was offered, bought, restored, or declined. Purchases are recorded as having happened, never with an amount.
  • Crash reports: when the App crashes or hits an unexpected error, a report is sent to Firebase Crashlytics. It contains the stack trace, your device model and OS version, an installation identifier, and a small set of technical values — the screen you were on, how many words you keep, whether you are premium, your notification mode, and internal numeric identifiers. It never contains the vocabulary itself: no word, definition, example, or note you write.
  • Advertisement data: ad impressions, clicks, and related metrics, through Google AdMob (free version only).

Third-Party Services

Google AdMob (Advertising)

We use Google AdMob to display advertisements in the free version of the App. AdMob may collect device information, IP address and location data, your advertising ID, and your interactions with ads. See Google's Privacy Policy for details.

Dictionary Lookups (freedictionaryapi.com)

The App includes a dictionary search, reachable both from its own Dictionary screen and from the word field on the Add Word screen. When you search for a word — or type one into the Add Word field — the App sends that single word, along with the language you are looking it up in, over an encrypted HTTPS connection to the Free Dictionary API at freedictionaryapi.com in order to retrieve its definition, pronunciation, and examples.

  • Only the word you are searching for or adding is sent. No account, name, email, device identifier, or advertising ID is attached to the request. As with any internet request, the service receives your device's IP address.
  • We do not upload your saved vocabulary list, your own definitions and notes, your learning progress, or your notification settings.
  • The App does not search on your behalf. A request is only made when you actively type into the dictionary search or the Add Word field — reviewing a word already saved sends nothing.
  • Results — including "no definition found" — are cached in the App's local database so that repeating a lookup does not send the word again. You can clear this cache by uninstalling the App.
  • If your device is offline, the App simply shows what it has already cached; no lookup is queued or sent later.

freedictionaryapi.com is operated independently of AutoVocab and is not used for advertising or tracking. The definitions it returns come from Wiktionary and are licensed CC BY-SA 4.0; the App credits this on the Dictionary screen and links back to the source page.

In-App Purchases

We offer a one-time premium purchase ("AutoVocab Pro") to remove advertisements. Purchase transactions are processed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. We do not collect or store your payment information — all transactions are handled securely by Apple and Google.

App Tracking Transparency (iOS)

On iOS devices, we request your permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework before collecting data for personalized advertising. You can change this permission at any time in your device settings.

Data Storage

Local Storage

All your vocabulary words, learning progress, and app settings are stored locally on your device using a SQLite database (word data and a cache of dictionary definitions you have looked up) and AsyncStorage (app preferences). This data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

Mnemonic Generation (iOS — On-Device)

On supported iPhones the App can generate a memory hook and an illustration for a word using Apple's on-device Foundation Models. The word, its definition, the generated sentence, and the picture are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to us or to any third party — this feature works even with the device offline. The resulting picture is stored on your device alongside the word and is included in iCloud sync unless you have turned that off. It is not included in the files you export.

iCloud Sync (iOS)

On iOS, your vocabulary, progress, and settings are backed up to your own iCloud account. This is on by default, and you can turn it off at any time under Settings › iCloud sync. When it is on, the App syncs when you open it, when you return to it, and when you leave it. This sync is:

  • to your personal iCloud account only — never to our servers, and never to a third party;
  • end-to-end encrypted by Apple;
  • only accessible to you via your iCloud account; and
  • governed by Apple's iCloud Terms of Service.

Turning the toggle off stops all further syncing. Data already in your iCloud account stays there until you delete it (see "Data Deletion" below).
